Remember to take something to cover your shoulders as a sign of respect, something that is important to note if you want to walk in the Vatican. Make sure you visit the Sistine Chapel with Michelangelo painted ceilings and St. Peter's Basilica while you're there and may even send postcards to get the signpost the Vatican.
Around Rome a lot of tourist traps, such as the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain (legend has it that if you throw a coin, you will go back one day, and if you throw two coins, you will find your true love), Spanish Steps and the Pantheon.
Try and visit places such as the Villa Borghese Park, near the Spanish Steps, and the beautiful bridge across the River Tiber River, to get away from the main crowds. Ask the locals behind the restaurant street, or in a hotel, in order to find some hidden gems the city has to offer.
There are many museums filled with classical Italian art, for example, and it is easy to take day trips to travel less full, but the equally good areas of Italy, such as Assisi, Palestrina and Frascati train or coach services through travel.
